Education: As a member of the Michigan State University/USAID project, “Partnerships for Food Industry Development: Fruits and Vegetables”, Allen participated in projects in Guatemala, Ghana, Nicaragua and South Africa. His role was to assist small-scale produce farmers in linking to customers in the global marketplace. The goal was to achieve sustainable business relationships that would raise agricultural incomes in these countries and provide customers with distinctive, high quality and safe products. Allen taught food marketing at the University of Stockholm and the University of Helsinki; and has made a number of international presentations on food marketing in countries including Argentina, Uruguay, the U.K., France, Germany, Hungary, Mexico, Romania, Ukraine, Japan, and South Africa. He conducted two MSU overseas classes in Europe. Allen led the Food Industry Management Program at Michigan State for 30 years and had joint appointments in the College of Business and Agriculture and Natural Resources. His professional interests relate to how food companies innovate to meet consumers’ increasing expectations for quality, convenience, safety and the enjoyment of food. Food Industry Experience: Allen is a past member of the Board of Directors of Hormel Foods Corporation; a consultant to a number of food processors and retailers; a Director of the International Stockmen’s Educational Foundation; and was Director of Retailer Relations at the American Meat Institute.
