International Experience:
Her work in international development has spanned over 14 years and focused on issues of food security, participatory community development, household livelihood strategies, research-extension linkages, extension and education systems, and household survey methodologies. Before joining MSU in 2006, she worked for FAO in their Africa Regional Office, where she coordinated numerous projects for over 6 years in Africa aimed at building capacity in the areas of education systems, multilateral partnerships, and research linkages. Previously Dr. Owens lived and worked in Guinea as the Country Director for American Refugee Committee developing the Micro-Credit and Food Aid programs there during the crisis years of 1996-97. Until that time, she was involved in Zaire, Cape Verde, Benin and Togo, where she helped to develop integrated rural community development curricula for use by farmers and extension agents. Other countries in which Dr. Owens has maintained applied research, training, and outreach activities include: Uganda, Peru, Ghana, and Serbia.
Current projects:
SNAgA Serbia National Agribusiness: With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Education, and the Chamber of Commerce, the SNAgA team will launch a nation-wide business planning competition to educate Serbian youth and promote new ideas and opportunities in the business of agriculture. In cooperation with the University of Agriculture and the Ministry of Education, the SNAgA team will introduce secondary and continuing education courses in entrepreneurship, agricultural marketing, business development, and understanding trends in agribusiness production and technology.
