Famine Early Warning Systems Network

FEWS-NET

The goal of the   Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) is to strengthen the abilities   of Haiti, Guatemala, Afghanistan and African countries and   regional organizations to manage risk of food insecurity through the provision   of timely and analytical early warning and vulnerability information.

FEWS NET is a   USAID-funded activity that collaborates with international, national, and   regional partners to provide timely and rigorous early warning and vulnerability   information on emerging or evolving food security issues. FEWS NET is   implemented by a Chemonics International consortium, USGS, NOAA, NASA and USDA.  The Chemonics consortium is comprised of Chemonics International, Michigan State University, WebFirst and the Food Economy   Group.

FEWS NET and its   partners are working to strengthen the capacity to assess, monitor and analyze   characteristics of markets that are relevant to food security and early warning   within a country or broader regional context to provide relevant, actionable and   timely information on response options in emergency and non-emergency contexts.   The role of the Institute of   International Agriculture at Michigan State University is to build knowledge, tools   and capacity in the area of markets and trade.

FEWS NET also focuses   its efforts on strengthening early warning and response networks in   Afghanistan,  Haiti, Guatemala as well as Africa. Activities to do this include capacity   development, network building and strengthening, developing policy useful   information, and forming consensus about food security problems and   solutions.
