Global Agrifood Systems Development
Quality Fund Initiative
The Global Agrifood Systems Development (GASD) initiative is a multi-college, multi-department initiative partially funded by the Michigan State University Quality Fund. The initiative aims to solidify and enhance the University’s position as a world leader and center of excellence for research, teaching and outreach in global agrifood systems. Five new faculty/specialist positions have been established, contributing directly to MSU’s emphasis on globalization and its commitment to prepare our students for careers in a world of mobility and connectedness, where businesses and economies transcend national borders. The five positions aim to enhance scholarship, attract external funding, impact business and communities in Michigan and around the world, and provide unique learning, discovery and engagement experiences for MSU students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Quality Fund provides funding for the following positions:
Economic Development Specialist
Dr. Songqing Jin will be developing research and teaching programs in
the area of globalization and economic development. He will also
develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in
economic development which will emphasize food system-related policy,
market development, technology adoption and innovation, and
institutional change in the rapidly changing global economies.
GASD Academic Specialist
Agribusiness partnerships, community liaison and study abroad
Dan Dutkiewicz is currently developing two new study abroad programs.
The International Development and Markets program would be primarily
held in E. Lansing, Washington DC, and various locations in India. The
Gender, Agriculture and Natural Resource Management program would
include NGO internships in Ghana and Malawi. The continuing development
of these programs is the direct result of a collective effort by many
departments and units on the Michigan State University campus.
