Projects

The Institute of International Agriculture was established on the campus of MSU in 1965. Since its inception, the IIA has been involved in development assistance programs throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the coordination of agricultural research, outreach, and training, the IIA has assisted in the global effort to achieve food security in order to improve the lives of others. We have projects in the following areas:

 
Biotechnology
:
The application of modern biotechnologies has transformed agriculture in the developed and developing world. Genetically modified crops have delivered agronomic, environmental, and economic benefits to both farmers and consumers. IIA is working to Commercialize the Bt Potato in South America, provide short-term assistance in biotechnology, and on the Southern Africa Biotechnology Project and Uganda Agricultural Productivity Enhancement Program.

 

 


Food Industry Development
:
Through research, teaching and outreach, these programs will impact global food security and enhance the lives of those in developing nations. Projects in this area include: Partnership for Food & Industry Development - Fruit & Vegetables, Indian Horticulture Development Alliance, Rural and Agricultural Incomes with a Sustainable Environment, Food Safety and Policy Center International Activities, Horticulture Exports Standards Initiative, Indonesia Agribusiness Market and Support Activity, Global Agrifood Systems Development Quality Fund Initiative and the Nicaragua Market-Oriented Training on Service and Standards Application.

 


Institution Building
:
IIA is currently involved in several programs which focus on institution building. Through the collaboration of scientists, government agencies, and educators, the IIA is engaged in many activities that aid host countries in capacity building and agricultural development. These include: Burundi Agribusiness Program, Collaborative Research Support Program, Higher Education for Development Project, India IPR, Central Asia Regional Integrated Pest Management Project and Sustaining Partnerships to enhance Rural Enterprise and Agribusiness Development.




Natural Resource Management & Crisis Respons
e: IIA participates in the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, a   USAID-funded activity that collaborates with international, national, and   regional partners to provide timely and rigorous early warning and vulnerability   information on emerging or evolving food security issues.
